What today we are seeing as Namibia is the place originally inhabited by the San people around 2,000 years ago. The Bantu speaking Herero community migrated there in the 1600s. The Ovambo, the largest ethnic group even today, migrated there in 1800s. So, the Namibian history can be considered as one of the oldest culture of the world.

Namibian history is of a great enthusiasm. The local people have a huge saga of the freedom fighting. In the late 15th century, the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to visit this part of the world and threw light on the great natural beauty and scenic mine of the earth. Later in 1884 the Germans captured the place and referred it as a German colony. Between 1904 and 1908 the German troops killed around en thousands of Herrero revolutionary who fought for their rights against colonial domination. During the World War 1, the South Africans regained the place from Germans and established as a mandated territory of the League of Nations, under the administrations of South Africa. Upon the dissolution of the League of Nations in 1946, South Africa refused to accept United Nations authority and to replace the mandate with UN trusteeship.

The South West African People’s Organizations (SWAPO) was formed by some of the black Marxist separatist group to begin small scale guerrilla attacks to achieve independence. Because of those efforts, in 1966, the UN called for the South Africa’s withdrawal from the territory and officially renamed as Namibia. South Africa refuses to accept the UN decisions. The fight continues between the SWAPO and the South Africa Government. The prime minister of South Africa refused any talks with SWAPO who were considered as the “sole legitimate representative” of the Namibian people by the UN.

Initially in1985, the South Africa Government handed over partial rights to the new multiracial administration but still they kept the veto with them to retain the indirect control over the Namibian people. Ultimately, the great efforts of the Namibian people was succeeded fully and on march 21,1990 Namibia was declared fully independent under the leadership of SWAPO leader Sam Nujoma. Nujoma was again elected in 1994 and 1999. After the decision not to seek reelection by Nujoma, Hifikepunye Pohamba was elected as president with 76%of votes. He joined office on March 21, 2005.
